It’s amazing where good ideas come from. They might come while you are singing in the shower or walking your dog, they might come at 3 in the morning or while you are driving your car, but the rest of the ideas can come from brainstorming. There are a lot of books about brainstorming, mind mapping and how to be a generally better thinker.

The ideal thing to do is to write large quantities of ideas that come to your head. Then chances are that the winning idea will be as good as the amount of ideas you have written down.

There is a lot of methods to choose from on how to generate ideas, but choose the method that you like the most and stick with it. One effective method which I have noticed to work a lot is to write down the problem or the objective of the project at the top of the sheet. Then force yourself to quickly write or sketch as many ideas as you can under 5 minutes, and don’t stop until those 5 minutes have passed and you’re hand starts to hurt (just kidding!).

It will get difficult after the first minute, that’s for sure, but don’t stop. Don’t censor yourself and your ideas, you’ll have plenty of time to filter them out later, so write down everything and anything that comes to your head. Sketch very quickly and messy, as long as you have the idea behind it then it works. You can also use symbols or metaphors to describe something.
